The Mobile Development Institute (MDI), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancement of quality mobile app development and standards in education, began providing free training to low-income students through the Mobilize America Initiative.
The training program is designed to be completed in 5-6 months. The students can learn from home as all of the instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on guidance is conducted over the Internet via teacher-led webinars and desktop sharing. Graduates of the program complete a portfolio application that they can leverage to launch their career and receive the MDICD certification in their field of specialty.
It begins with a series of three group training classes conducted over a period of three months. The first course involves fundamental programming theories and concepts that can apply to all computer systems, mobile or otherwise. This introductory course also helps students to decide which current mobile platform that they want to master (the current choices available are Google Android, Apple iOS, or RIM BlackBerry). The second course instructs the students in the specific programming language that they will need as a foundation to create software for their mobile platform of choice. The third course provides an introduction to programming directly for their mobile platform of choice.
Once the group training has been completed, the student then begins working with one of the MDI?s mobile development master trainers on a one-on-one basis. The master helps the student complete a mobile application development project. Over the course of eight weeks, the master guides the student through every step of building a finished and published application. The completed student application serves as their portfolio piece that the student is then able to offer for sale as well as proof of experience in seeking employment. When their final project is complete, they receive an MDICD certification from the Mobile Development Institute in their mobile platform field of specialty.
For students to qualify for free training, they must be United States citizens between 16 to 20 years of age, their family must be considered as low-income by current regional standards, the student must have a demonstrated interest and passion for computer technology, along with a measured aptitude in logic problem solutions and puzzles. Students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis as funding permits, and can be added to the waiting list by visiting mobiledevelopmentinstitute.org/scholarships.

Dry eye symptoms have become the number one reason for visits to the eye doctor in the United States. With dry eye increasing worldwide, women who wear eye makeup might wonder if makeup could make their dry eye symptoms worse. Health and beauty expert Sharon Kleyne, founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research, Inc. and host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water radio talk show, addressed this question in a recent interview.
Many people who wear cosmetic eye makeup such as mascara and eye liner, says Mrs. Kleyne, could eventually find that these applications make their eyes feel tired and uncomfortable, especially in situations stressful to eyes such as staying up late, spending long hours at a computer, or drinking and smoking.
According to Sharon Kleyne, a common method of relieving eye discomfort and dry eye symptoms is to apply formulated eye drops. Mrs. Kleyne cautions that applying eye drops while wearing eye makeup might not always be a good idea. When you apply eye drops, some of the formulation may end up on the eyelid. If there is makeup on the eyelid, the drops could dissolve the make-up and mix with it. The mixture of eye drops and makeup could then flow back into the eyes, causing additional irritation and redness. Mrs. Kleyne notes that this is most likely to occur when wearing glitter and/or powder that flakes.
Sharon Kleyne and the American Academy of Ophthalmology offer the following tips to on the safe and healthy use of eye makeup. These suggestions should be followed by everyone, whether they have dry eye symptoms or not (http://www.geteyesmart.org/eeyesmart/eye-makeup.cfm).
1. Throw away makeup after three months because bacteria can grow in it.
2. Never share eye makeup.
3. If you tend to be allergic, introduce only one new eye product at a time to be sure there is no reaction.
4. Always cleanse your face before applying makeup.
5. Never use sharp objects to separate clumped mascara.
6. Never apply makeup in a moving vehicle or in a situation where you are likely to bounce around.
7. If you tend to have dry eyes or wear contact lenses, avoid glitter and powder.
8. Remove all eye makeup before sleeping
Sharon Kleyne’s popular radio talk show, Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water, is sponsored by Bio-Logic Aqua Research, whose Nature’s Tears? EyeMist? is the only all-natural, all water patented eye mist that soothes dry eye symptoms and supplements natural tear film water. Because it is a mist, Nature’s Tears? EyeMist? will not cause eye make-up to run. As an extra benefit the mist instantly revitalizes faded makeup colors.
Nature’s Tears? EyeMist? is available at http://www.BioLogicAqua.com, Amazon.com, drugstore.com and selected drugstores nationwide. The product is expected to be available worldwide by the end of 2013.
Listen to the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water Mondays, 10 a.m., PST/PDT. The syndicated radio talk show is heard on Voice America/World Talk Radio, Green Talk Network and Apple iTunes. Waltham, MA (PRWEB) March 12, 2012
Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the release of NeuroApps: MRI Atlas of Human White Matter, the first in a new series of apps created for the iPad?. Based on the MRI Atlas of White Matter by Kenichi Oishi, Andreia V. Faria, Peter C M van Zijl and Susumu Mori, this interactive application re-makes the atlas for a new generation of neuroscience researchers, clinicians and students.
?It is an honor for Elsevier to build, on the work of these groundbreaking neuroscience researchers, a truly interactive application for the iPad?,? said Suzanne BeDell, Managing Director, Science and Technology Books, Elsevier. ?With this new product we hope to free researchers and others to work and study more nimbly and creatively.?
Using NeuroApps: MRI Atlas of Human White Matter, researchers, clinicians and students are able to find, visualize, and learn to identify the major pathways through the brain and their proximity to key neuroanatomical structures. The app also allows the user to scroll through the brain in sequence to follow a tract from beginning to end. While based upon the images from the print book, in the app they have been digitally enhanced and the resulting 4-color images are much sharper on the iPad device which also allows image zooming for more detailed study.
?This platform allows us to interact with the contents of our atlas in a much more efficient manner,? said Dr. Susumu Mori, one of the creators of the atlas. ?It provides an intuitive graphics interface, which is often essential when we are exploring anatomy.?
Available exclusively through iTunes?, the app has a full complement of functionalities:
????Format allows viewer to compare coronal, horizontal, and sagittal sections in one view
????Two types of stereotaxic coordinates (Talairach and MNI coordinates) are provided to define brain locations.
????Includes both MRI and DTI images and allows the user to switch between MRI and DTI view for any location in the brain
????Fifty three white matter structures, 38 cortical areas, and 22 deep gray matter structures are defined and labeled. In addition, locations of 11 white matter tracts and 36 cytoarchitectonic areas are defined. These structures can be interactively superimposed on the MRI/DTI images.
????The trajectories of the tracts can be followed sequentially through the brain
?Digital media, particularly the new generation of tablets, have created a platform perfectly suited to high visual book content,? said David Marques, VP Business Development, Workflow Solutions, Science and Technology Books, Elsevier. ?In addition to NeuroApps: MRI Atlas of Human White Matter, we have several other apps being developed based on classic Elsevier books including ChemApps: Strategic Applications of Named Reactions, which is publishing later in March and is based upon the book Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis by Laszlo Kurti and Barbara Czako. Soon after, Elsevier will release an app based upon Chemical Resistance Database, to be followed by apps based upon Pipeline Rules of Thumb, Fundamentals of Forensic Science, Molecular Biology, Computer Architecture, Television Production, Policing in America, and Photoshop for Photographers. These other apps will be released in the coming weeks and months.?

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) March 06, 2012
The flexibility and acceptance of Siri leads to a question: How did speech recognition suddenly get so good after years of what most observers have viewed as mediocre success at best? Most consumers have encountered speech recognition when they called a customer service line and usually found the interaction only marginally better than pressing touch-tone keys. What caused this “tipping point,” where flexible speech recognition is beginning to grow not only on mobile phones, but in automobiles, for controlling TV, playing games, providing better customer service, and more?
The truth is that, while Apple may have driven realization of the maturing of speech technology, the current state of the technology has been driven not by a single tipping point, but more by a chain reaction of tipping points that built up to the point of explosion, according to Bill Meisel, president of TMA Associates and the MVC program organizer.
In technology, Meisel claimed, an accumulation of “tipping points” (re Malcolm Gladwell’s best-seller) can work together to create a chain reaction that spreads in multiple directions and markets. Speech recognition in particular is in the middle of such a chain reaction. The result will drive fundamental changes in many markets.
The beginning of the chain reaction for speech technology is a combination of improving wireless connectivity, growth in the use of smartphones, pervasive use of the Web, lower cost of computing power to support compute-intensive processes such as speech recognition, the growing variety and complexity of web sites and applications, a steady improvement in the underlying core speech technology, and the growing availability and variety of labeled speech data to build better speech recognition models. The continuing explosion in the use of speech technology is the result of three key factors:
(1) Enthusiasm for a user interface innovation that is particularly effective on small devices such as a mobile phone or when hands-free use is safer and more convenient (e.g., when driving);
(2) The over-burdening of the Graphical User Interface by growing web and app variety (particularly evident on small devices); and
(3) The simplicity, efficiency, and generality of the personal assistant model (“just say or type what you want, and get directly to the answer”).
The Mobile Voice Conference, coming up shortly, provides attendees with information to help them take advantage of the rapidly developing opportunities created by the chain reaction in the use of speech technology. It covers the implications of this development in many areas, including marketing, enterprise use, and customer service. The talks provide examples of how to apply this development successfully in your business and resources for doing so. The detailed program is available at http://www.mobilevoiceconference.com. In one innovation, the first day of the conference, Vendor Day on Monday, March 12, is free.

Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) March 07, 2012
In a move that makes traditional weather forecasts as outdated as the typewriter, RainAware LLC introduces RainAware, its breakthrough new app for the iPhone and iPad that uses a proprietary forecasting system to predict within minutes when rain, snow, sleet and storms will reach the user’s exact location.
After years of testing, the meteorologists behind RainAware have developed a system that can precisely estimate what time precipitation will begin and end, up to 3 hours in advance, at their exact location. RainAware uses the phone’s GPS, local radar, and exclusive algorithms to produce a reliable and precise weather forecast.
“With RainAware, a new era of weather forecasting has begun,” said the creators of RainAware. “We’ve been conditioned to expect bad forecasts, but hopefully this is about to change.”
The app’s creators, who have nearly 40 years of combined experience in meteorology and computer programming, sought out to improve upon what they saw as an outdated system of inaccurate and confusing weather forecasts virtually everywhere you look.
?Ask ten people what a ’50 % chance of rain today’ means and you might get ten different answers. It doesn?t tell you for sure if it?s gonna rain, and certainly not what time,? said the creators of RainAware.
Conventional forecasts from TV and newspapers, weather sites and other mobile apps can only give generalized predictions about when precipitation will arrive in your area. As a result, many times the forecast ends up being wrong. ?Weather can change rapidly over a very short distance. It might rain on half the people in the area, but that leaves the other half with a bad forecast,? the app’s creators said.
RainAware upgrades the traditional, general-area forecast to a much more specific one tailored to the individual, providing precipitation start and end times to within minutes and removing a large amount of uncertainly in the short-term.
“Why get stuck in the rain if you don?t have to? We now have the technology to help people stay dry and alert them when rain is on the way, up to a few hours in advance,” said the creators of RainAware.
The program updates every few minutes to keep on top of changing weather conditions, providing maximum time to react. The creators are also announcing that after purchasing RainAware, users will benefit from periodic server-level updates to the RainAware system that will improve the accuracy of their forecasts over time. ?We know that weather prediction will never be perfect,? they said. ?But that won?t stop us from trying.?
Features of the new RainAware app include:
Accurate weather forecasts: Shows precise time and intensity estimates for the user’s exact location to within minutes.
Easy to read: The main screen is a simple clock format or see a 3-hour graph or unique 1-hour rain clock.
Points of interest: Offers exact precipitation times for nearby airports, golf courses, downtown areas, sports stadiums and more. (More cities to be added in next version update).
Radar maps: Displays up-to-date local radar images with the current location highlighted.
Smart backgrounds: Images change based on storm threat and time of day.
Device requirements:
iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
Compatible with iOS 4.2 or higher
8 MB
Pricing and availability:
RainAware is currently available for sale in the United States and Puerto Rico through the App Store in the Weather category for $ 6.99 USD. An Android version of the app will be released in the spring.

James R. Gorrie talks about Apple in the recent ?Apples and Dinosaurs? article published in the Absolute Wealth newsletter. The iPad/iPhone maker had just surpassed ExxonMobil for that title and was, the newsletter adds, a terrific example of outside the box thinking in American business.
Now that Apple has achieved another milestone of becoming worth $ 500 billion, which the newsletter reveals, is more than the net worth of Poland, another look at the garage borne company is in order. The Absolute Wealth newsletter explains, that it is enlightening to compare Apple with ExxonMobil in terms of what effects the two giant firms have upon people collectively and as individuals.
The comparison between the two firms is startling, the newsletter explains, because first of all, examine the motivations that drive each company to do what they do. That is, the newsletter says, identify the why at Apple, why didn?t Apple simply make good computers? They would still make money, for a while the newsletter reports, at least, but money for its own sake wasn?t it.
For Apple Absolute Wealth reveals in their newsletter, innovation is the key motivation, innovation is what allows the Apple guys to become zillionaires. Innovation isn?t just deciding to make something different; it?s also a decision to be something different, the newsletter explains.
The newsletter asks what?s the ?why? behind Apple?s innovation? Possible, the newsletter says, it is to more efficiently process information and communication, or more simply put, personal liberty. The Absolute Wealth newsletter explains, that Apple?s innovations have led to greater personal liberty and freedom of movement than any other invention since, the automobile.
Which brings up ExxonMobil, the newsletter reveals, who also has a huge impact upon each and every person. Oil is what fuels cars, heats homes, and powers power plants the newsletter adds, truth is, today, people cannot function as a society without it. The Absolute Wealth newsletter reports the irony is, what once set people free, now has people over a barrel. The cost of individual freedom is counted in the price of a barrel of oil, explains the newsletter.
The ?why? of oil companies like ExxonMobil, the newsletter reveals, is clearly not innovation, because the internal combustion engine technology is over 100 years old. The basic concept of burning a fossil fuel to power society is archaic at best, the newsletter says, so oil technology, as its essence, has become a suppressive force in society.
Unlike Apple the newsletter reveals, which embraces innovation, the oil industry fears innovation, because if it were to be rendered obsolete, it would fail to meet its primary goal. Which, the newsletter explains, is to make money and to keep making money, ExxonMobil, and all other oil companies, must stifle innovation and suppress new ideas in order to protect their business.

Today, ZapThink, a Dov?l Technologies Company, announced that Jason Bloomberg will be speaking at Dataversity?s Enterprise Data World on the topic of Dropping ACID: Architecting with Eventual Consistency in the Cloud. His talk is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 2, at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center.
?It?s impossible for any distributed computer system to simultaneously guarantee immediate consistency, availability, and partition tolerance,? said Jason Bloomberg, President of ZapThink. ?Most enterprise database management systems are inherently partition intolerant, thus allowing for atomic, consistent, isolated, and durable (ACID) transactionality. However, Cloud Computing environments must be partition tolerant in order to achieve the elasticity benefit so important to the Cloud. Highly available Cloud applications must therefore forego immediate data consistency, and with it, ACID. What?s left? BASE: Basic availability, soft state, and eventual consistency.?
Mr. Bloomberg?s session will explore how eventual data consistency affects architecting?and rearchitecting?applications for a Cloud environment. He will discard the common misconception that the Cloud is a ?virtual server in the sky,? and explore how architects must think differently about architecting for Cloud environments vs. traditional on-premise computing.
Attendees of this session will:
????Get a solid grounding in the CAP theorem and BASE
????Understand the special data requirements Cloud Computing presents when architecting applications
????Think differently about basic concepts like transactionality and consistency
ZapThink will also be a media sponsor of the Enterprise Data World Conference. For more information and to register, visit http://edw2012.dataversity.net.
